A Cellist Puts His Own Imprint on the Classics

Personality among classical musicians, in some conservative philosophies, shouldn't exist. The idea is that interpreters should completely subordinate themselves to the letter of a Beethoven score.

Yet when you encounter cellist Clancy Newman, whose Philadelphia recital debut was Sunday at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, you hear what you didn't know you were missing: classics utterly transformed without being dismantled.
